Go deeper into the Decode Scripture episode with this printable Decoded Map on what Jesus meant when he said, "Let the dead bury their dead."

This PDF companion is designed for personal study and helps you revisit the core structure behind the episode in a clear, written format.

Inside, you'll find:

• the surface reading that places death primarily at the end of bodily life
• the decoded distinction between the death Jesus describes within a living person and the bodily death he repeatedly calls sleep
• key passages decoded from Matthew 8:21-22, Matthew 9:23-24, Luke 8, John 11, Acts 7, 1 Thessalonians 4, 1 Corinthians 15, Luke 15, Revelation 3:1, John 17:3, Romans 8:6, Genesis 2:17, John 5:24-29, Luke 17:21, John 8:51-52, Luke 20:38, Hebrews 2:14-15, and John 11:24-27
• the two meanings operating inside the words "let the dead bury their dead"
• the repeated biblical use of sleep for bodily death
• the present-tense language of passing from death unto life in John 5
• historical parallels from Philo of Alexandria and Saint Augustine
• language notes on dead, sleep, cemetery, and the tenses of John 5:24
• a reflection section on approaching the day of bodily death without confusing it with the death Jesus warned people about during life

This Decoded Map explores Jesus' six words, "Let the dead bury their dead," as a sentence containing two different uses of death.

The first dead must be living people, because they are the ones capable of carrying out the burial. The second dead are the bodies being buried. The same Greek word stands in both places, but the sentence itself requires two different senses.

The map then follows Jesus' own vocabulary for bodily death. When a girl dies, he says she sleeps. When Lazarus dies, he again calls it sleep before explaining plainly to the disciples that Lazarus is dead. His first followers keep the same language for deaths that were not reversed, including Stephen and deceased members of the early churches.

The study then asks what the other death means.

Luke 15 describes the Prodigal Son as dead and alive again even though his body never dies. Revelation addresses a living congregation that has a name that it lives and yet is dead. John 17 defines eternal life through knowing God, while Romans 8 says that to be carnally minded is death.

Genesis 2:17 adds another layer. Adam is told that death will occur "in the day" he eats, yet Genesis later records him living for centuries. On the day he eats, the text instead shows fear, hiding, and estrangement while the body remains alive.

John 5 then brings the pattern into the present tense. The one who hears and believes has everlasting life and has already passed from death unto life. Jesus immediately speaks of an hour that "now is" when the dead hear and live, before later distinguishing another future hour involving those in the graves.

The cross-tradition section examines Philo of Alexandria's description of two kinds of death and Augustine's reading of John 5 and "let the dead bury their dead" as distinguishing death of the soul from death of the body.

The language section explores how the same word for dead operates in Matthew 8:22, Jesus' use of sleep, the origin of the word cemetery as a sleeping place, and the present and completed tenses used in John 5:24.

The reflection section returns to the day the body dies. The map does not deny bodily death, grief, resurrection, or judgment. It asks whether the death Jesus repeatedly warned about is something that can already be entered or left during this life.
