Go deeper into the Decode Scripture episode with this printable Decoded Map on "the way, the truth, and the life" in John 14:6.
This PDF companion is designed for personal study and helps you revisit the core structure behind the episode in a clear, written format.
Inside, you'll find:
• the surface reading of the way as a road, the truth as a doctrine, and the life as heaven after death
• the decoded meaning of all three as dimensions of present being
• key verses decoded from John 14:5-6, Exodus 3:14, Acts 9:2, Acts 24:14, 2 Corinthians 3, Matthew 10:26, John 11:25, John 3:16, John 8:58, Luke 17:21, and John 10:9
• the Greek meanings and connections behind hodos, aletheia, ego eimi, ho on, and zoe
• the connection between Thomas asking for a location and Jesus answering without giving directions
• the Default Mode Network and its tendency to build mental roads between the past, future, and personal identity
• a two-minute practice centered on the unfinished words "I am"
This Decoded Map explores John 14:6 not as a description of an external road, an accepted doctrine, or a destination reached after death, but as an inward statement about the bare fact of being present.
It begins with Thomas asking, "How can we know the way?" and shows why John 14:5 must be read before the famous answer in verse six. Thomas asks for a route, but Jesus names himself rather than giving a location.
The map examines hodos as both a road and a manner of living, aletheia as truth understood through the image of something hidden becoming uncovered, and zoe as life or aliveness without the additional word that would push it into the future.
It also follows the connection between the Greek words ego eimi in John and the Greek Old Testament rendering of Exodus 3:14. The distinction between ego eimi and ho on is maintained carefully so the linguistic connection is not overstated.
The science section introduces the Default Mode Network, which replays the past, rehearses the future, and builds a continuous narrative about personal identity. It also discusses the 2011 Yale study led by Judson Brewer while making clear that the findings are a pattern of measured brain activity, not scientific proof of a spiritual interpretation.
The practice section invites you to sit quietly for two minutes and notice the bare statement "I am" without completing it with an identity, emotion, role, condition, or destination.
