The younger son represents the part of you that searches outside itself for what it believes is missing, scattering its attention and substance in a far country until it becomes empty enough to turn inward. The older son represents the part that remains close, obeys every rule, and still refuses to enter the joy that was already available.

The map walks through the moment the younger son "came to himself," showing that the inward turning happened before he took a single step toward home. It also examines the older son's anger, his use of slave language, and the father's reminder that everything in the house had always been available to him.
